The girls’ varsity hockey team has had an amazing season so far, with an outstanding 8-1-1 record. On Wednesday, Jan. 15, they triumphed in a 6-2 win against Worcester.
When asked about the game, prep Camryn Wild explained how the team initially faced troubles but eventually rose to the occasion: “I think that we had a pretty strong game. The whole game definitely wasn’t pretty, but we pushed through. We were motivated, and we got the things that we needed to have done.”
Prep Eliot McCarthy seconded the team’s hardworking and persistent spirit, highlighting lower goalkeeper Lily Sabol’s performance: “Lily was really good in net. She played so awesome. She kept us in the game.”
The team also continues to look ahead, with a series of tough games coming up. Wild highlighted the team’s efforts to improve, adding, “I think we’re just continuing to work on the small details, as well as continuing to push ourselves, hitting the net, and making smart plays.”
McCarthy also emphasized the role of the coaches in shaping the team, stating, “I think the coaches are always tough on us and are always ready to tell us what we can do better, which I think in the end is helpful because we are always striving for the next improvement instead of being happy with where we’re at.”
The team’s camaraderie and tight-knit environment are also vital to their success. June Koh, a prep, highlighted the strong team spirit. “Every goal that we score, everyone stands up for the cheer. We’re all so excited to be here,” she said.
Wild agreed with this statement, expressing, “It’s a really good community that we have built. We all push each other but also motivate each other every day. Even though I came to Exeter not knowing anybody, I knew that I would be okay because I had the hockey team to be welcoming and to help me with whatever I needed.”
When asked to describe the team in one word, Wild said, “Family.”
