2/13/25 Highlight: Girls’ Varsity Hockey
By KAYLEE GONG and ELLINA KIM
With exciting Winter Thaw festivities on the forefront of their minds, the Girls’ Varsity Hockey team still took time out of their long weekends to get out on the ice and play. On Saturday, Feb. 8, the team played a close and grueling away game against BB&N. Despite the final 2-3 loss, Big Red played hard and put on a strong showing against a tough team.
After a long bus ride down to Boston, the team was eager to get onto the ice. Prep Eliot McCarthy explained, “Going into the BB&N game, I’d say we had pretty high hopes because we’ve been facing a lot of tough teams, and this game felt like an opportunity to do well.”
Sadly, the game started slowly for them. Prep June Koh reflected, “It was a tough game, and there were a lot of back-and-forth moments. The other team had scored two goals in the beginning.”
McCarthy continued, “They scored two in the first period, but we didn’t get down on ourselves.” Exeter dug deep and pushed hard. Beneath the shining lights and through the spraying ice, prep Dominique Reiher managed to score her first goal this season to put Exeter on the scoreboard. Cheers ran throughout the arena, and Koh elaborated, “We were able to claw our way back up. Props to Dominique and the amazing other goals.”
Senior Soleil Jamani echoed Koh’s praise. “Dominique scored her first goal in the game, and she also just played amazingly. I think everyone’s been waiting for her to get her first goal because she’s a super-talented player. That was a happy moment.”
Even with a near comeback, Exeter unfortunately did not finish on top. Despite the loss, the team made sure to enjoy the game and make the most of it. McCarthy concluded with the teams’ takeaways, “It was a tough game, but a hard-fought battle. Overall, I think everyone’s pretty proud of how we played and how close it was.”
As the GV Ice Hockey team nears the end of their season, with only seven games left, they are continuously growing and improving. Throughout the season, they’ve fostered close bonds and continue to bring positivity to each game. Their next home game is on Wednesday, Feb. 19, at 2:30 p.m. against Saint Paul’s School, so make sure to go out and support them! GO BIG RED!
