2/13/25 Highlight: Boys’ Varsity Squash
By ANDREW YANG and SERENA YUE
“Blood and danger!” The voices of the boys’ varsity squash team echo throughout the long line of squash courts. This week, the team played two memorable matches against Andover and Tabor.
On Wednesday, the team traveled to Andover and faced an unfortunate loss of 7-0. Prep Maverick Hilal commented, “We did the best that we’ve done in the past two years. Andover is a strong team and I think we fought well against them.”
The team returned even more determined to win their next match, which was in three days. Captain and upper Max Liu noted, “One thing we noticed about the match was that we just weren’t hitting our targets on the court. So that’s something we focused on on Thursday and Friday, just getting our shots to be cleaner. And then I think that reflected well on the Tabor match, where everyone held their ground and composure, managing to close off the match.”
Their work paid off on Saturday when they claimed a close victory over Tabor, who they played at Groton, with the score 4-3. Although three varsity players could not make it, JV did a good job stepping in.
Now, as the team is looking forward to nationals, they’re working harder than ever. “We’re going to keep on working on our endurance throughout the match to be able to win those tough five-setters. We’ll also work on our mental strengths, being able to think about how to change strategy between games and reflect that during match play,” Liu said.
Hilal concluded, “We’re a super strong team. We have a fierce spirit together and we all blend in well. We appreciate each other and I think we all make each other better — this season has been very successful.”
