On Feb. 1, Exeter’s boys’ varsity hockey earned a 6-4 victory against Cushing Academy. They are doing well this season, with this match being their ninth win.
Exeter started with a 2-0 lead, scored by Tyler Callander and Tyler Montecalvo. Cushing followed up with a power play goal, evening out the game at 2-2. As soon as Dryden Dervish broke the tie, Cushing answered with another goal, moving the game to 3-3. In the third quarter, Exeter took the lead with a 2-point lead by Gavin Fitzpatrick and Noah Poinsett-Yoshida.
Reflecting on the shorthanded goals, Prep Jack Tucker stated, “We were challenged with a lot of penalty kills but we did well and scored.” Throughout the game, Big Read had to play with fewer players than the other team.
Prep Leo Kim commented, “There was a lot of energy. In particular, the shorthanded goals made the crowd electric.”
Tucker later added, “We did a good job getting to the net. Most of our goals came from close, aggressive shots.”
Will Cavanagh added an empty-netter, securing Exeter’s victory. Throughout the game, Brendan Petraco was an excellent goalie, saving 42 shots during the game. “We played pretty aggressively, putting a lot of pressure on them and taking away their time and space,” concluded Tucker.
