The Academy’s varsity swimming and diving won their home meet this Saturday afternoon, Jan. 25, in a successful performance over Suffield Academy. This is their seventh consecutive win, making the team undefeated so far this season.
Lower and diver Ben Wilkinson explained the extensive process that it took to prepare for the meet. “We do drills to get us in the mood and in the movement of where we’re going, and also in the mental mindset because diving is a mental sport. You have to be both mentally and physically aware of what you’re doing in the air, so just mentally getting yourself into that zone is a big part.”
Lower diver Ari Lee agreed, saying, “Our divers have been preparing a lot, especially on the diving boards and in dry land practices. We practice somersaults on the mats in the field house, and we also set goals for certain dives that we want to be able to master this term. So, I think those are all things that have prepared us for the meets.”
With their undefeated record, the team has clearly proved that all of their practices and preparations have paid off. Prep swimmer Owen Lee marked his confidence in the team, affirming, “We’re looking pretty strong for the rest of the season. I think our goals are just to make sure everybody’s up in spirits, especially with the two big meets coming up in Easterns and New Englands. We’re always working toward a goal there and scoring pretty high.”
A. Lee added, “I’m hopeful. There’s still half a term left, and I think it’s going to be good.”
The varsity swimming and diving team will take on Choate Rosemary Hall next Saturday, Feb. 1, at home. The season is going very well, and the team is working hard to keep that momentum going.
