1/16/25 Highlight: Girls’ Varsity Squash

By  MARYN BOWMAN  and ARISA YOSHINO

The girls’ varsity squash team has had an excellent season so far. After losing five seniors and many long-standing traditions, the team has embraced a new leaf with two new coaches.

“We’ve kept an open mind this season,” upper Alva Carlston shared. “The new coaches have pushed us with more conditioning than before, and it’s helped us get tougher both mentally and physically.”

The positive and welcoming environment fostered by the team is seen both on and off the court. Lower Chloé Lind noted, “We are a very happy, fun-loving team. Despite the intense, competitive nature of squash, we find a way to make everything light and enjoyable.”

Carlston agreed. “Even during setbacks, we stay supportive and positive, which keeps us strong as a team.”

The season began with a hard-fought 4-3 win against the Dexter Southfield School. “It was our first game, and everyone was excited to compete,” Lind recalled.

The following match against the Groton School resulted in a 0-7 loss, but it provided valuable lessons for the team. Lind added, “Groton is a strong team, and we fought hard, scoring some great points.”

Most recently, Exeter faced off against Deerfield Academy in what proved to be another challenging match. Despite the team’s best efforts, they were defeated 0-7. Lind reflected, “Deerfield is a very strong team, and while the game didn’t go as we hoped, it was a great opportunity to see what we need to work on as we prepare for Nationals.”

Carlston said, “We’ve always had a competitive relationship with Deerfield, and this match was no exception.”

From grueling conditioning sessions to unique traditions, the team’s shared experiences have built a tight-knit bond. Carlston highlighted a favorite tradition: cheering with their left hands in. “We put our left hands in because it’s closer to the heart. It’s a reminder of how united we are as a team.”

The team’s next game is January 25 at Phillips Academy Andover. Make sure to cheer them on!
