On Wednesday, Oct. 23, the girls’ varsity soccer team faced Dexter Southfield, a tough opponent who has won most of its games thus far.
The game became more suspenseful around the opponent’s fourth goal, described by prep Annabel Jordan, a new player on the team. Jordan commented, “It [was] hard getting scored on that much.”
As a result, Jordan explained that the pressure applied by Dexter Southfield pushed them to the defensive, thus hindering their communication on the pitch. However, Jordan shared how the captains were able to counter it. “Ella Shea and Diego all were telling us to talk more and like made us positive, which also helps us talk more.”
The game was a challenge, but there were many memorable parts throughout. Seniors and captains Aubrey Silvestri and Celia Dowling were there to bring positive energy to the team.
Jordan Said, “They made sure that everyone still had energy and everyone was still being positive and everyone was still ready to keep playing instead of giving up.” The captains acted as the glue to keep the team together.
Despite the deficit, their team spirit remained strong. Jordan explained that their goal going into the game was to uphold their team’s core values, “confianza, corazón y comunidad,” which is Spanish for confidence, heart, and community. She noted that those are the values that hold them together as a team, even when they’re losing.
“Our captains commanded us through the tough loss incredibly,” prep Laurel Vandewater added. “It was amazing to see the resilience that our team had and the will to not waste a second of the game.”
Though the girls lost the match, they demonstrated resilience through their attitude toward the loss, and they look forward to moving on in their season with success.
