ESSO in Action

Hello again! This week we are not promoting a club, but rather lending insight into what is going on with ESSO as spring is now in full swing! Hopefully, through reading this, you will reach a greater understanding of how ESSO functions in the extracurricular machine of Exeter and how you can play a crucial role in that future.

Every Thursday during department meetings, the ESSO Board meets to discuss the direction of the organization and plan events. As of now, there are many projects that we hope to accomplish for the sake of ESSO’s expansion. First, there is the notion of interclub promotion. Many clubs, whether they are ESSO or not, are closely related; artists can be found in both Kids Create and Art from the Heart, Junior Computer Programming can also see technologically interested children in Robotics and Beach Cleanup members can find similar interests among the fish lovers of DORSAL. We want to promote cooperation among clubs with similar interests so that students can easily find the clubs that suit them best.

Speaking of finding preferred clubs, we are also working on a survey. This survey asks you to answer a series of questions so that it may generate a list of clubs to sign up for that suit your interests. The survey, however, is part of an even larger goal that I would like to see ESSO pursue. As you may have noticed, while the school takes steps to adopt Canvas and tablets in class, ExeterConnect remains as intuitive as Pet Rocks. Unfortunately, ExeterConnect is ESSO’s only platform on which to centralize all of its pertinent information. Most people don’t even know that an ESSO page exists on ExeterConnect. Rather than trying to work with the website, I would like to create another platform for ESSO: an app.

This is my ultimate goal for ESSO. I would like to make an app that will allow students to sign up for clubs, be notified by changes in schedule, see newsletters and do whatever things may evolve from ESSO having a greater ability to work with Exonians. By next fall, I hope to meet this goal and allow ESSO to debut its new way of reaching Exonians. With this app, we could post the club preference survey and the signup surveys sent out at the start of every term. I also hope to ask Exeter Computer Science Club if they, or any other students interested, want to help. If you would like to be a part of this novel project for ESSO, you can contact me at jragone@exter.edu!

In other news, Beach Cleanup is hosting a cookout this Sunday, so sign up as soon as you can, because seats on the Red Dragon to the beach will go quickly! Also on May 1 is a pajama-themed book reading in the Library Commons to local children. If a sizzling barbeque or snugly PJ’s is not to your liking, I would mark the calendar for May 22, which is the day ESSO will be holding a field day! That’s right! There will be all kinds of clubs with all kinds of stations. If you don’t come for Beach Cleanup’s volleyball, come for the food, face painting or many other events! To sign up for the cookout bus, e-mail Issay or me at jragone@exter.edu or imatsumoto@exeter.edu. To sign up for the PJ Story time in the library, email Beth Rohloff at brohloff@exeter.edu. Have a great week and thanks for reading!
