Green Corner

Hello! My name is Lara Galligani. As a new member of the E-proctor board I have some ideas for the future.

First of all, I hope we can continue focusing on composting. As you may know we’ve been working on getting composting in Grill this year, and, after the workshops on Climate Action Day, two of their trash cans were turned into composting bins.

I think that the next step in that direction would be to work on implementing a composting system in all the dorms on campus.

As a campus we throw away huge amounts of food every day, (the average person throws away one pound of food everyday) and it’s a shame to see so much of it go in the trash.

Hi! My name is Dilan Nana and I have always been interested in sustainable living: reducing human’s negative impact on the planet so that our future generations can enjoy the world as much as we have.

As a new E-proctor board member, I want to keep the idea of sustainable living in mind. One of my main ideas is reducing energy consumption.

Two ideas I have in mind include reforming current dorms and buildings to be more efficient and creating zero to net positive buildings.

The easiest option is to reform the current buildings and dorms, so for Climate Action Day, we ran an energy audit on Dutch House to review the efficacy of the house.

With the information learned through the audit, we now know what to improve in the house to save more energy. If we can find out how to make all dorms more efficient, then we can excel as a school that cares about the environment.

A company, PLAN, came to PEA to help us fix our waste management due to dorm cleanout. A representative visited the school and helped us come up with ideas to spread the word about sustainable living: reducing waste and recycling.

Students working with the PLAN representative split up into groups to brainstorm separate ideas to let people know that their trash might be someone else’s treasure.

The media team has come up with ideas to make a Snapchat geofilter, a website, t-shirts, etcetera in order to bring awareness to this problem.

We’re also setting up collection stations all over campus for donations, and then we’re hosting a big “yard sale” at the beginning of next year. This way new and returning students can get dorm essentials at a huge discount and we reduce how much we throw in landfills. In our continued efforts composting and the exciting new collaboration with PLAN, we can’t wait for what’s in store for campus, and we hope you feel the same!
