Admissions Office Adopts Tinder-Like App

Prospective PEA students will see a slightly different application process for next year. A new system, based on the popular “dating” app Tinder, will be implemented in the coming months. The app will be developed by September, and called Kindling. Every applicant will have a Tinder-like profile, including three to five photos and a short biography of his or her life. The main picture of each student will be overlaid with their current school, GPA, and three activities. Exonians will then be able to swipe left or right in order pick their future classmates. “This system will streamline the process and finally give current Exonians a voice in choosing their classmates,” Head of Admissions Michael Gary said. “I love this,” one current lower said. “It really is so non-sibi of students to take time out of their day and help out the over-burdened admissions department.” Many students and faculty welcome the idea. One English teacher told us, “you can tell within about four seconds whether or not two people are going to have chemistry. Since Exeter is all about Harkness, many of us teachers think it's great that students will be able to pick their own peers and discussion partners.” Some concerns, however, have been brought up over student-selected admittance. One upper told us, “I accidentally opened Kindling instead of Tinder, so I mean, Harkness discussion might not be that great, but at least we'll increase in hotness.” This issue, now termed 'tindling', is more common than Mr. Gary anticipated. “We've noticed an influx in acceptances of... certain types of students,” Gary explained, “there seems to be no correlation between SSAT scores or GPA in admittance rates.” However, some students believe that this application will finally generate an accurate description of Exeter for prospective applicants. “We see attractiveness, grades, and clubs when we use Kindling,” one senior said. “Besides the surface, what is there to an Exonian anyways?” Kindling will be tested out with select groups of students, typically from the California and Florida areas of applicants, resulting in an open forum discussion in the winter of this year. A final Student Council vote will be head just before application season next year. Student Council President, Benj Cohen, commented that he approves of the idea.  “Anything that gets us more crew recruits is fine by me,” said Cohen, along with the rest of boat one.
