The "Show"
Every spring, as the sun rolls out, the grass turns green, and the on-shore winds rush over the academy, the center of the PEA solar system takes the field. Junior Varsity baseball (or, as their moms like to call it, "The Show") has, as far as recent memory can serve, stolen the athletic hearts of the school, giving students a reason to get out of bed in the morning.
Under the powerful hands of Coach Mark Trafton (aka Outlaw Marky T Mix, aka Justice Nugget), Coach Rich Aaronian (aka Free Style Richie A Slingshot), and Coach Tom Simpson (aka Ice TS Styles), The Show flashes their leather, generating a fan base that absolutely dwarfs those of any of team at the school, even the math team. Perhaps it’s their seamless mechanics, moonshot long balls, or mad swag, that creates such community interest, but every game day the academy packs itself into the forgotten field behind the faculty houses.
“The fan support is nearly overwhelming, and the setup we’ve got them in doesn’t even come close to handling spectator capacity,” says Keith Humphrey, the revered field groundskeeper. At the general demand of the public, the trustees have brought architects and contractors to take a look at the field. At this point, considering the cold springs, a dome seems to be the way to go, but the loss of the authenticity is a big risk factor. “Whenever the show wins, it’s like Vancouver after the 2011 NHL championship… people can die.” says Colby Chaffin, centerfield and shortest-stop on the team.
Come cheer on "The Show" at home. Just go to the Varsity field, and keep on walking.
