Faculty Follies

I’ll admit, I think this has been the best faculty follies yet. A lot of us came in with high expectations on Tuesday morning. The crowd was buzzing, and when Dean Kim stepped onto the stage, everyone roared. Then the punchline: something crazy like “this is not a faculty follies assembly.” The crowd went quiet while I strained to contain my laughter: Subtle, Dean Kim, but effective. In previous years I’ve awaited the projector screen rolling down and a plethora of faculty from varied departments strutting their stuff. Surely, I thought to myself, Mr. Caldwell would soon be doing the “Nae Nae,” Mr. Wolfson, the Cat Daddy. But, to my initial dismay, there was no such video. It was then that I realized-- this year’s faculty follies would be about Abraham Lincoln. It was a genius ruse, and with each biographical factoid about our 16th president, the great emancipator (or was he?), I couldn’t help but find myself giggling. As humor editor, it’s my job to determine what’s funny. While some have expressed their concerns as to my “qualifications” or “proficiency” in this position, I think I know what’s what. I was sorely disappointed in my fellow jaded Exonians when I looked around the assembly hall to see stoney face. Let me assure you, Dean Kim’s one man faculty folly was satire of the highest caliber.
