10/10/24 Highlight: Girls’ Varsity Field Hockey

By ARISA and NAOMI MOSKOVIVICH

On Saturday, October 5th, the girls’ varsity field hockey game had an intense home game against Noble and Greenough School that ended in a 2-2 tie after overtime. Both teams were evenly matched, making for an exciting and competitive game that kept the spectators on the edge of their seats the entire time.

Exeter took the early lead just five minutes into the first quarter with a goal by Natalia Ulbin, assisted by Grace Benson off a well-executed corner. Nobles responded late in the first half, scoring in a corner to tie the score at 1-1 just before halftime. In the third quarter, Luvy Danielson put Exeter back in front with a goal assisted once again by Benson. However, Nobles quickly countered, scoring four minutes later to even the score at 2-2.

Both teams had scoring chances in the final quarter and throughout a tense 10-minute overtime, which prep player Eliot McCarthy described as a difficult part of the game: “I think the toughest moment probably was at the very end of the game after overtime was over because we had just kind of battled off a corner and they didn’t score off of it. They did really good and I think everyone overall felt that if we had another chance to go into double overtime we could have gotten a win, but you know a tie is better than a loss.”. Neither side could find the winning goal, but Exeter’s defense held firm, ensuring the game ended in a draw.

Even in tough games like these, the team’s community is always there to uplift each other. As Eliot McCarthy described as her favorite thing about the team, “The people are really nice and I think that even though we’re there to win, there’s a good balance of wanting to win and competitiveness.” A senior midfielder, Hawley Dick adds that, “Our teammates are there to support each other like family.” The 2-2 tie adds to a competitive streak for the team this season, as the team now looks ahead to two away games this week, with matches against Pingree on Wednesday and NMH on Friday.
