2/06/25 Highlight: Girls’ Varsity Basketball

By EMI SOUTHGATE and ARISA YOSHINO

The girls’ varsity basketball team delivered a thrilling 58-29 win against St. Paul’s on Friday, Jan. 31. The victory is a highlight of their season so far, with a record of 3-8.

Despite a challenging start, the team has made immense progress. Prep Sarika Agarwalla highlighted their growth, stating, “The [games] haven’t been going our way, but we’re definitely improving. It’s a very new team. Almost three-quarters of the girls are new, and we’re just trying to get into the rhythm of everything. But I think we’ve bonded. Our team chemistry is getting there.”

Prep Haylie Regan echoed this sentiment, specifically emphasizing the role of the captains in shaping their team: “The captains are great, they provide a strong team bond and they always find a way to find the positives in any situation. They help us succeed by encouraging us, and even when things aren’t going the way we want, they build us up, and tell us why things aren’t working.” The captains’ leadership and support have been central in fostering the team’s success and environment both on and off the court.

This growing sense of unity also led to better performance on the court. The team recently participated in a scavenger hunt around the athletic center as a creative team bonding exercise. “It was fun just trying to beat the other team, but it was also team bonding at the same time. I thought it was very creative of our coach to do that,” Agarwalla shared.

Looking ahead, the team is eager to continue their upward trajectory with two home games coming up. “We have one game on Wednesday, one game on Saturday. They’re pretty big games, and I think we have a good chance,” Agarwalla reflected. “Hopefully, we can get the win.” The rest of the season looks like a path of success for the team.
