Moxie Debuts Prep Goalie in Tough Loss
Big Red girls’ field hockey lost again this week 0-2 at Tabor, putting its record at 4-5-3. The defeat placed the team under .500 for the first time this season and extended the squad’s losing streak to 3.
Moxie made the trek down to Tabor hungry for a win coming off two straight losses. “We were looking forward to a competitive game against Tabor hoping in a resulting win,” upper Brittani Chapman said. While the match yielded several positive highlights, to the athletes’ dismay, the team’s effort ultimately culminated in a loss.
The aforementioned highlights included prep Michaela O’Brien’s debut in net and the return of starting senior and captain goalie, Allegra Grant. Grant, regarding her return to the net, said, “It felt pretty good to be back on the field after being out for a couple weeks. It was kind of difficult to get right back into it against Hotchkiss, but the defense helped me out a lot against them and Tabor.”
While Big Red’s athletes began the game by pressuring the opponents, Tabor challenged the team with an even more energized squad and beat the girls offensively and holding them on defense. By halftime, regardless of the athletes’ effort, the team returned to the locker room scoreless and discouraged.
Second half did not turn out to be much differet; Tabor did not cease to challenge Big Red and Moxie walked off the field with its third straight loss. Although the loss was discouraging, especially since the season is coming to an end, Chapman said, “We definitely took the game as a tough loss, and with such a close score we are looking forward to showcase our refined skills and bounce back from last Saturday’s game into this week’s three game schedule.”
Chapman added that the losing streak will not continue moving forward and that there are plenty of games left in season for the team to recover, Moxie will strive to remain the same competitive team that they have showed us they can be all season.
Other players echoed Chapman’s sentiments. “It’s just all the more reason to stay hungry. We will have a good game against Holderness,” upper Bonnie LaBonte said. “Our team wants to win.”
It’s this kind of hunger that pushed the team all season, and it’s this kind of hunger that will drive the team to success, regardless of the several injuries and illness that hinder them at times. In these coming weeks the team plans on practicing hard and perfecting shot finishes and getting themselves established on the scoreboard early in the game. In these coming weeks, the team plans on winning: the girls are going to make sure they come out of next match with a “W.”
Big Red’s next game is this Friday, Nov. 6, a 4:45 home game versus Middlesex.
