Girls’ Hockey Trounces BB&N

The Big Red girls’ hockey team took on BB&N this past Saturday and triumphed three goals to two. Defeating BB&N, one of the more competitive teams in the league this season, proved an invigorating and satisfying win. Senior and captain Clara Gilbert said that when BB&N mounted a comeback in the last five minutes and scored two goals against Exeter, it served as “a wake up call for the team. We started to go easier, which gave them the chance to come back.”

Aside from the short lapse of intensity, Gilbert said, “We played great in the offensive zone. The defense played outstandingly, and Allegra [Grant] had some amazing saves.”

The game started off easy for Big Red, who scored early in the game. With a hard fought second period, upper Rachel Morse put in a grinder goal off the right pad of BB&N’s goalie for a two to nothing lead. Then with five minutes and thirty seconds remaining in the third period, the BB&N coach pulled his goalie on an amazing powerplay. A scrum near the boards led to upper Deziray Desousa snagging the puck and firing it the full length of the ice for the third and final goal of Exeter’s day. But it was the start of BB&N’s.

“We played great in the offensive zone. The defense played outstandingly, and Allegra [Grant] had some amazing saves.”

It began with a lucky bounce. There was a shot from the blue line and a mess of bodies in front of brick wall upper Allegra Grant and the puck seemed to go in. That’s when the game started to get scary. Within minutes, the opposition scored again, putting the hometown faithful in a fit of fright. With the game clock winding down, the Big Red girls kept the puck out of their net for a third time to win the game.

To recap the entire event, lower Bonnie Labonte said, “Marley [Jenkins] had a sweet goal to get us on the board first. She broke into the zone and got her own rebound. Dez had two goals; one was an empty netter. We were winning [three to nothing] until the last three minutes of the game [when] we let up goals on the PK. Allegra had an outstanding game and kept us in it—she lays the foundation for our success. It was a close one but it was great to beat BB&N. They have been quite the powerhouse school in the past.”

Big Red will play New Hampton this Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
