1/30/25 Highlight: Girls’ Junior Varsity Hockey

By EVAN CHEN and ARISA YOSHINO

The girls’ junior varsity ice hockey team is having a phenomenal season, boasting a 3-1-1 record. In their recent matchups against Holderness School, the team secured outstanding victories with scores of 4-0 and 7-0. Prep Isla Wiegand-Hammond reflected on the game. “In our last game against Holderness, we didn’t score until the second period. So we did well in figuring out how to play together.”

Prep Jordan Rubio specifically highlighted lower goalkeeper Roxanne Debbouzzi for her stellar efforts in both games: “I think I have to shout out Roxanne for her shutouts against Holderness. Roxanne is in her first year playing goalie and doing absolutely insane.”

Beyond their success on the ice, the team also prides itself on fostering a welcoming and supportive environment. Wiegand-Hammond emphasized the importance of teamwork, reflecting, “I’m having a lot of fun so far. I feel like everybody is super team-minded, and we all play well together.”

Rubio added to this sentiment, highlighting, “I think we’re good at supporting one another, especially since some of us don’t have as much experience as others. We’re good at building each other up.”

Friendships are also central to the team’s dynamic. As new students Rubio and Wiegand-Hammond both expressed gratitude for how warmly they were welcomed, Rubio remarked, “I’ve made so many friends on the team, and since we are smaller in number, we have a super close bond.”

When it comes to overcoming challenges, the team tackles obstacles together with a positive mindset and the support of their coaches. Rubio highlighted the importance of the coaches: “Coach P. is absolutely insane. I love her. Her drills are awesome and she’s a great coach. She knows what she’s doing, and she knows when to be serious and be funny. Coach Bobby has also been such a good help along the way.”

Wiegand-Hammond agreed, emphasizing the team’s ability to maintain perspective: “I think we just try to keep it low stakes and have fun. So the obstacles don’t get us down too much.”

With a strong team spirit, excellent coaching staff, and a commitment to supporting one another, the girls’ junior varsity ice hockey team is sure to continue building a season to remember — both on and off the ice.
