12/19/24 Highlight: Varsity Squash
By SOPHIA BALARAMAN and MADDIE BARRETT
On Dec. 11, Big Red Squash faced off against two schools, with our boys having their first match of the season, hosting Milton Academy. Our girls had their second match of the season, heading over to the Groton School. The team took an overall loss, with boys going 3-4 and girls going 0-7.
Despite the number on the scoreboard, Big Red fought hard until the end. Senior Erin Chen reflected on the team’s past games. “Our matches this season have been thrilling! The girls on the team are really brilliant and have a lot of perseverance through the long matches when they’re alone inside the box of a Squash court,” Chen said.
“I think the matches went pretty well, the top seven played some very competitive matches,” prep Matias Yau added. Even though we lost the varsity match we won in spirit by fighting to the end.”
The squash team is training hard and have high hopes for the rest of the season. Yau said, “I think that we can be very successful for the rest of the season. We have a good Varsity and JV squad that will go far.”
Chen also reflected about the game of squash itself and the team’s current training intensity. “Squash has a lot of kinks and peculiar ways of playing and everyone on our team has different styles of playing because of all the creative opportunities on court. Our practices have been much more intense than previous years, which I think is going to help us improve overall. I distinctly remember two practices ago when we ran 200 court sprints, much more than I’ve done ever before in one practice, which I think will be the norm this season.”
Next week, we have our boys varsity squash team hitting the road to the Groton School. Make sure to cheer them on. We have high hopes for Big Red Squash!
