A Letter From the 145th Executive Board

Content warning: The following statement contains mentions of a student death and suicide.

On Jan. 16, our community learned of the tragic death of upper Matthew Clemson by suicide. This news greatly impacted The Exonian and our members, for Matthew was dear to many of us. The past week has not been easy as we grapple with his permanent absence from our campus and our lives.

In order to give Matthew’s family time to mourn privately, The Exonian will not be printing a memorial issue immediately. For now, we’ve found solace in the outpouring of love and support from our community, as well as all the beautiful notes, letters, posts, and reflections that have been shared.

While we continue to grieve as a community, The Exonian has decided to slow down our operations in the interest of the mental health of our editors and writers. No definite plans have been made yet, but in the coming weeks, we will continue to maintain a flexible publishing schedule, with the mental and physical health of our staff remaining our utmost priority. We hope that everyone can find the support they need in this time of shared sorrow.

This issue’s article on Martin Luther King Jr. Day will allude to Matthew’s death. However, we will not go into the specific details of his passing. We have decided to do this in order to acknowledge the work of the Martin Luther King Jr. Committee.

These decisions have been made following conversations with The Exonian’s advisors and the Academy’s administration and are in line with the wishes of the Clemson family. In the coming weeks, there will be a memorial service held by the Academy to give students a place to grieve and reflect.
