ESSO in Action
Hello friends,
Aloha once again! I hope you enjoyed last week’s article by Francis! I have some great news. The time is upon us. For the first time in many years, ESSO will be holding a field day! It is this Sunday, May 22, from 2 to 4 p.m. on the lawn between the Academy Center and Phillips Hall.
The purpose of the day is to display the achievements of many ESSO clubs. For instance, two art clubs that work with children, Kids Create and Art from the Heart, will be face painting. There will be countless stations for students and children to enjoy: everything from sack races and tug-of-war to cupcake decorating. For the winners of the events, we will have some fun prizes to take home. I will be running the grills where we will have burgers, hot dogs, veggie burgers, snacks and drinks.
ESSO hasn’t had an event like this in many years. Our hope is that this will open avenues for interclub promotion, and by working together at a field day clubs will find common threads among their goals. Another hope is that people can simply have a good time. May 22 is the Sunday before the final full week of school. The leaves on the trees are green, flowers have blossomed and the temperature is predicted to be in the high seventies. This will be enticing to not only ESSO-nians but also the local children with whom ESSO children clubs work.
This field day will likely have many children who are a part of Harris Family Children’s Center. If you have ever worked with an ESSO tutoring club, you may very well recognize a few of these kids. If you have not, you should come down to see how much fun working with children can be! I am a member of Junior Computer Programming, which helps children learn to code and create their own games. Hopefully, I will grill for some of the kids with whom I have worked for past terms!
Overall, this is going to be a fun event as a final leap into summer. If you are a member of an ESSO club, come down to see what you can do to help out and have fun. If you tutor a kid, tell them to come out on Sunday for some fun. And if you have never been a part of ESSO before, come out and see what we are all about! For more information regarding signups for helping out with stations, e-mail me at jragone@exeter.edu, or anyone else on the ESSO Board. I cannot wait to see you this Sunday, and with luck, you will try one of my burgers!
