Life Advice

Hi, Exonians!

It’s turnover week! Also, we are into the second week of the odd gap between Thanksgiving and winter break. Here are some frequently asked questions about how to get through this time.

What do I do if I hate my winter sport?

The winter is a tough time, but if you’re doing something you don’t enjoy it’ll make it even tougher. If your sport’s too terrible, you can quit, but I personally think the winter is better when you have a team. I would suggest to keep your mind open and give it a chance. You might be surprised by the people you meet and learn to appreciate. However, if you still find it to be unbearable, and you’ve tried to give it a chance, it may be time to move on.

What is “cuffing”?

Although the name seems to suggest differently, “cuffing” does not involve handcuffs, shirt cuffs or any other kind of tangible cuff. “Cuffing” is rather a term used to describe when people find a significant other during the first weeks of winter term. I think sometimes people get afraid of being lonely in the winter because of the dark and cold days, but “cuffing” isn’t something you should feel as a necessity. Winter term can be a grind, but if you surround yourself with caring people, you can get through just fine.

Is it ok if I don’t really sleep this week?

You can go for it, but it’s usually pretty hard to function without sleep for more than a day or two (the longest I’ve seen someone go is 52 hours). Speaking from experience, after a late night you might still feel like a superhero the next day, but for the rest of the week you won’t be feeling too hot. It’s hard, especially when teachers are piling on the work, but try to maintain your normal schedule. Use your time effectively so you can still find time for sleep.

How can I make it through this week and the rest of winter term in one piece?

Take it one day at a time! I think people can get overwhelmed by winter when they think of all the long, cold months at once. That’s daunting, but if you slow down and just focus on putting one foot in front of the other, it will make the term easier to get through. For people hearing back from colleges, winter term may feel like even more of a drag, especially if you’ve received unwanted news. If this is the case, remember that things usually have a way of working out, so trust that you’re going to find an even greater opportunity for yourself somewhere else. However, I would like to add that it’s still important to dedicate time for relaxing and unwinding because going full force for three months might burn you out a little. Keep a positive attitude, and when you’re having days that are tougher than others, just know there’s at least one other person around you feeling the same way—you don’t have to feel alone.

I hope everyone stays well rested and keeps their head up as we approach break. You should focus in as we get into the true swing of winter term. Have a wonderful break and stay healthy!
