Dearest Exonians,
Welcome back, fashionistas! As your ambassadors to the fashion world outside the Exeter bubble, we, Helen Edwards and Millie Dunstan, would like to welcome you back to a fresh school year with some fresh fall and pre-fall looks. But first, a look back on this summer in the fashion world…
On August 8, Italian fashion designer and creative director for Givenchy Ricardo Tisci celebrated his 40th birthday in style with an enormous bash in Ibiza, and the only thing that could even come close to the glamour he’s been creating at Givenchy would be this party’s guest. Though the party consisted of many notable in unbelievable clothes, nothing tops Kate Moss in a turquoise bikini and mesh dress, simply because she is one of three people that could possibly pull of anything like it (the other two being Rose McGowan in her chain dress at the 1998 MTV VMA’s and Rihanna’s dress at the 2014 CFDA Awards that was composed solely of Swarovski crystals).
Speaking of birthdays, British model and growing fashion icon Cara Delevingne also celebrated her 22nd on August 12 on a fabulous yacht, also in Ibiza. Cara has been up to a lot this summer in addition to just shows, the official release of her line with Mulberry taking place just a few weeks before her birthday at the Wilderness festival in England. As the host of the picnic, she gallivanted around a meadow with her friends in a Cara-van and flaunted some of her newly released designs.
However, now that the summer is over, we feel that a fall trend report is necessary to transition from sunny beaches back to the real world. First off, the internet’s favorite trend, normcore, is still alive and kicking on the high fashion runway. This classic trend is a favorite of brands like Christopher Kane and Max Mara, where you can never go wrong with a white button down shirt, perfectly tailored pants and an oversized, androgynous wool coat.
Speaking of coats, shearling has indeed made a comeback. From Prada’s colorful block-print coats to Alexander Wang’s futuristic parka, shearling is sure to be a hit when it comes time to bundle up this fall.
Though the Exeter fall is sure to bring some darker days, runways have nonetheless been sporting vibrant brights and rave prints for this fall, whether it be Thakoon’s lively florals paired with drapey sweaters or Acne Studios black and white swirls and stripes. Just because it’s fall doesn’t mean we have to look dreary.
More brights can be spotted on the runway in the revamped 60’s mod style. If you can’t imagine it, just think Twiggy or Edie Sedgwick. If you can’t imagine either of them (side-eyeing you), just imagine big, round eyes, 1000 layers of mascara and sharp, structured, high cut dresses in bright, geometric patterns. Although, now in 2014, this style is a bit more understated in dresses and coats, found in subtler hues that are paired with more modern accessories, as was demonstrated so well by the likes of Valentino and hot newcomer Mary Katrantzou.
On the other side of things (in case any of you have been planning months in advance for Abbot casino), sheer evening wear has been seen everywhere in fall haute couture shows. From the likes of Donna Karan and Burberry Prorsum, all the way to Valentino and Kardashian-favorite Roberto Cavalli, haute couture runways have seen their fair share of nipples draped in jewels and chiffon this season. We love it and you should too!
Lastly, there’s nothing better than good sweater weather, and this season, designers took sweaters further than just a cardigan or a fisherman’s knit. This fall, we are talking jackets, pants, cardigans the size of duster coats and even evening wear. Haider Ackerman even made a suit composed solely of some luscious thick knits.
In the end, though, we’re all still stuck here at least for the next year. So, stock up on sweaters and don’t be afraid of brights as the temperatures get lower. We’ll be here updating you on all the latest news in the fashion world (and you might even get a shout out, but we’ll see).
Xx,
Helen and Millie
