Life Advice
Q1: As a senior, I will be going off to college next year. Is there anything I should be doing differently this year to prepare to leave? ChakrasAlignedSimpy: First and foremost, there’s simply no way you can take everything with you. Things like couches, posters, tapestries, rugs, anything in your dorm that’s been passed down throughout the generations to you, should be passed to those younger than you. Also, many seniors will have trouble letting go of the relationships they’ve made here on campus. Some people will get grumpy and some people will just naturally distance themselves from friends and faculty. Make sure that you leave with no regrets, have fun these last few weeks while you can and do something that you haven’t been able to the last few years. Yoosk: I’d agree with Mason. I think it’s important during the end of the year to try not to be too lazy. Even though everyone is losing motivation, you should do something with your free time instead of just napping. Watch a movie with some friends, go to more EPs or meditations on week nights. This time of year can be stressful and anticipation for the summer is really high, but try not to take yourself too seriously and still have some fun. Q2: With summer quickly approaching, I realized how disconnected I am from the “real world.” I’m ashamed to say that I learn everything that I know from Reddit. When I hear people talking about current events around campus, I usually barely know anything about the topics. How do you guys keep with world news and other stuff outside of the Exeter community? Yoosk: I know that with our tight schedules, fitting in any activities that aren’t essential to our lives can be difficult. But you also don’t want to be that guy who has no understanding of current events/news. I’ve heard from a friend that NPR’s Hourly Newscast that can be found on the Internet is very helpful because it runs through world news in only five minutes. One of my personal favorite methods is using an app called Circa, which breaks down news into its essential points. The app is free, so definitely go grab it. ChakrasAlignedSimpy: There are a few very easy ways to stay connected. Apps like Flipboard can keep you up on anything you’re interested, whether it be music, daily news, architecture and design or humor. It’s a lot easier to catch up on your news when you can learn about other interests of yours at the same time. Also, social networks like Twitter and Tumblr can keep you informed about anything you want if you follow the right sites—make sure to use social networks to your advantage.~Have any life problems?
