Loaf and Ladle Closes Doors

Due to a torrent of recent floods and increased local competition, the Loaf and Ladle restaurant on Water Street is now marked with a “Closed” sign on its front door, after having served members of the Exeter community for 26 years.“The Loaf and Ladle has been an important part of the community for students and visitors (even presidential candidates) for many years, and the restaurant's food and ambience will be greatly missed,” Principal Tom Hassan said.Located on the Exeter River in downtown Exeter, the property has flooded countless times since its opening. In 2010, the restaurant closed three times in six weeks after torrents of water reached unexpected highs. The Loaf and Ladle, opened by Joan Harlow in the early 1970s, is currently owned by Meredith Stopler, who bought both the restaurant and bakery in 1986."Waterfront property is great. If it's not running through your property, it's better," Stolper said in an interview with Seacoast Online.During the restaurant’s decline, Stolper made efforts to salvage the business. “The Loaf has become a hub of the Exeter community in many ways and now it needs your help,” Stopler said in a YouTube video posted on July 11, 2012, entitled “Save the Loaf and Ladle.”Despites Stopler’s campaign to raise $70,000 through donations on Indiegogo, a crowd fundraising site, the goal fell markedly short, collecting only $11, 280 in donations in 2012.The eatery holds dear memories for both current Exonians and alumni.Famous for its Polish Easter bread, anadama loaf and award-winning soups and chili, history instructor Kent McConnell agreed that the restaurant is the comfort of the community.“I was up in Maine—in midcoast Maine, and when I talked to a guy there and told him I was from Exeter, he asked me whether Loaf and Ladle was still there or not. I think this experience shows how Loaf and Ladle is a symbol of Exeter and identifies the town,” McConnell said.“When I did go there, I really loved the atmosphere because it was really cozy and warm, unlike some other places which were extremely popular,” senior Alan Guo said. “It's unfortunate that they are closing since their food was great and it was a place that I enjoyed.”

The restaurant was also known as a landmark. During the span of 26 years, politicians passing through the town visited the site.

Celebrities including Hillary Clinton, former Sen. Bill Bradley and actress Meredith Baxter frequented the Loaf and Ladle. During the presidential primary season of December 2007, President Barack Obama enjoyed a bowl of the famous chili.Stopler’s video, which also features local resident author Dean Merchant, a strong advocate for the cause, includes footage of the indoor hardwood floors and the outside store front.“I am pleased to be a part of this fundraising appeal. There are so many ways I can tell you how special this is,” Merchant said.
