Wildlife at Exeter: The Bear
BY AMERSON LIANG ‘27
As a young prep, Obadiah Jameson ran the trails of Exeter, pursuing his passion for speed. He was enamored by moving his legs fast and watched the scenic forest during runs on the dusty paths.
During this particular day, he practiced sprints alone, listening to his feet press against the ground. Near the end of his projected quarter-mile, he felt the ground below him become loose, and with the next stride he took, the dirt beneath him fell. His arms flailed as he lost his balance, and fear took him when looking down at the eminent submerged cave below. His head made contact with a pile of pillowy, fallen dirt, and then he passed out.
Awaking from his sudden slumber, Obadiah looked up at the sinkhole that had eaten him alive. He saw a dark blue sky dotted with beautiful stars. Surprisingly, he felt warm in his new cave, like he was smothered in a nice fur blanket. Then, he felt some breathing on his neck. HE WAS SLEEPING ON A BEAR. His heart began to palpitate, his body shook with fear, and he began trembling. However, the bear was still asleep, snoring so loudly it sounded like huge drums rattling with sound.
Obadiah looked for an escape. He saw silhouettes of roots coming out from where he fell, which he could easily climb. He also could traverse his surroundings in the cave, but it was dark and uncharted. Suddenly, the bear began to hear Obadiah’s rustling and shake off its drowsiness.
WHAT WILL HAPPEN TO OBADIAH?
WILL HE ESCAPE THE CUDDLY CLUTCHES OF THE BEAR
OR BECOME ITS DINNER?
