On Wednesday, September 11, Exeter’s varsity field hockey team played a home game against the New Hampton School. Through the hard work involved in many drills and during preseason, the team overcame in-game challenges and defeated their opponents with a final score of 2-1.

Although New Hampton scored an unexpected goal in the final minute of the first quarter, Exeter kept strong pressure on their opponents in the second quarter. Unfazed, Exeter came back strong, scoring two more goals that led to their victory.

“The game went very well,” senior Grace Benson recalled. “It was the first game of the season, so it was a slower start for us. However, our comeback is a testament to our work ethic as a team; we worked on improving our overall stamina, which paid off in the round. I want to shout out Clare for our winning goal and Josie, our goalie, who’s crushing it in the cage!”

Captain Hannah Hoyt agreed. “The obvious highlight of the game was senior Clare Stewart’s goal in the final minutes of the fourth quarter making the score 2-1. However, there were many highlights worth noting. Lower Luvy Danielson scored a beautiful goal off of a hard drive in the circle. Lower Josie Hilbert was a star in goal, only letting by one shot despite the many corner opportunities New Hampton had.”

“Our goalie, Josie Hilbert, had an incredible dive save in the first half of the game,” senior Natalia Ulbin said.

“Josie was a brick wall as a goalie and always kept a great morale,” senior Hawley Dick said.

Overall, the team played a great season opener thanks to their weeks of hard work and the supportive environment of the team.
