Girls’ Lacrosse Topples Milton at Home

Last Saturday, the girls’ varsity lacrosse team competed against Milton Academy at home. Exeter crushed their opponents, winning easily with final score of 16-6.  This victory extended their winning streak to nine games, and with the addition of a win against New Hampton school yesterday afternoon, their record now stands at 10-0.

Big Red jumped on Milton early, aggressively driving to the cage.  In the midfield the team battled hard, gaining possession from interceptions and causing multiple turnovers. The team moved the ball smoothly and connected well in transition from defense to offense, which allowed for plenty of offensive opportunities.

Prep Bella Hillman elaborated on the team’s effort. “We maintained this intensity throughout the game which enabled us to control our offensive movement,” she said.

"Because we played so well the entire game, we are able to capture the momentum and score a large amount of goals one after another.”

Exeter demonstrated their superior ability once again this week, dictating the game with their intense style of play. Keeping in mind their game against NMH last week, Exeter recognized the importance of working hard for the entire game.  Lower Anna Reaman described this feeling. “During the Milton game, we played 100 percent the whole game. In most of our games, our first half was not our best performance. But then we would play our best during the second half. Because we played so well the entire game, we are able to capture the momentum and score a large amount of goals one after another,” she said.

Despite some of Milton’s strong offensive players, Exeter’s defence was able to figure out their movement quickly and ultimately shut down Milton’s offensive efforts. Lower Michaella McCarthy expanded on Exeter’s defensive presence. “I think that our defense has been our largest strength this season. When our offense has been struggling, our defensive efforts have been dependable and often are able to provide our attack with possessions and multiple scoring opportunities,” she said.

Going forward, Big Red hopes to work on shot placement and improving their overall shooting percentage. “Sometimes we have 30 shots in a game, but only 15 are goals. So, if we top off our hard work with even better shooting, we could put up more points,” Hillman explained.

Lower Eleanor Mallett agreed with Hillman, saying that improving their shooting percentage “just comes with practice.”

Exeter took away many positives from their gain against Milton, and they hope to continue their success throughout the season. The girls’ next game is against Pingree School on Wednesday, which will be on home turf.
