Girls’ Hockey Ties New Hampton in Dramatic Overtime Deadlock

Girls’ varsity hockey took on the New Hampton Huskies at home for a pre-Valentine’s Day matchup. After three hard-fought periods, the two teams remained deadlocked at 1-1. Both came into overtime hungry to put the other team away, but at the end of the day, both sides stood champions together. Girls’ varsity hockey now stands just under and even record with a record of 7-8-3.The girls came into the game wanting a win. They knew that it was possible for them to beat a top-tier team like New Hampton because they had just crushed Andover’s perfect record the previous week.Upper Brittani Chapman described the team’s mentality heading into this important match up. “We were hungry for a win after our close loss with KUA, and knowing that New Hampton is always a good team, we went in with all we had and gave it our all,” she said. The girls went into the game with this in mind and felt confident taking on the Huskies.

“Seeing as we only have a few games left, I think that as long as we keep up the hard work and team spirit we can end up with a record over .500.”

Throughout the game, the team excelled on both defense and offense, trying New Hampton’s end and holding their own on the ice. Prep Chiara Christie commented on their success, saying, “We had a lot of communication and hustle. Our team worked hard to win the 50/50 battles we needed to.”When it came time to get on the board, senior Dez DeSousa stepped up and put one in the back of the net. “Dez’s goal was dope,” prep goalie Michaela O’Brien said.Headed into overtime, the team was able to stay calm and prevent the Huskies from adding another “W” to the list. Christie said that the team knew “that if we continued with our hard work and hustle we could finish the game with a tie or even a win.”The team was overall pleased with walking away tied. Chapman elaborated on their tough opponents, saying, “Going into the game, New Hampton was ranked in the top five for D1 girls hockey—so we knew it was going to be a tough game. Beating Andover last Wednesday was a huge win for us, so we knew we could keep up with NH. Although we didn’t win, we were very happy with a tie since they were such a good team.”Moving forward, Big Red hopes to keep winning, and they have a solid chance at finishing above .500. They plan on working hard these coming practices and to really hammer in key drills and plays. “Seeing as we only have a few games left, I think that as long as we keep up the hard work and team spirit we can end up with a record over .500,” Chapman said.No matter how their season ends, everyone should come support them in their last few games at home, as well as get amped to see them take on the Smurfs again at winter E/a.
