Tough Lost for Field Hockey
Moxie lost to Andover 1-0 this week after a fiercely played game at this fall’s E/a games. This last loss put the team’s record below .500, at 5-8-4.
Varsity field hockey came out strong looking to put points on the board and get the ball in back in the goal early in the game. Upper Bella Edo described the team’s initial mindset. “We all really wanted to win and knew we had to go out there and leave it all on the field.” So Moxie came out aggressive in the first half hoping to follow through and bring home a “W” for Exeter this weekend.
“We were really aggressive and really put in 110 percent,” upper Michaela Corvi said. Toward the end of a tightly contested first half with numerous possession changes, a scrum broke out in front of the net and somehow an Andover player was able to tip it in, putting them up on the board 1-0 where they would remain for the rest of the game.
At halftime the team was amped and their attitudes were electrified by the crowds of parents, alumni and students who had come to see their E/a showdown. “The fans definitely had a lot of energy which transferred on to the field,” Corvi said. The team came out hard and ready to do whatever it took to get themselves up on the board. They struggled the whole half, creating offensive opportunities but not being able to capitalize on those opportunities. The ability to finish has been a problem of theirs the whole season, and the team plans to fix that for next year.
A particularly outstanding performance by senior goalie Allegra Grant kept them in the game, preventing Andover from extending its lead. This was Grant’s last fall E/a and last Exeter field hockey game and she knew that she wanted to make it one to remember.
“It was really sad knowing that E/a was my last game with Moxie. They are such a supportive team and foster such a special team dynamic, and I don't think I’ll ever play for another team that makes me feel more at home than with these girls,” Grant said.
The team is so grateful for every game Grant plays because not only does she keep them relevant on the score board, but as a captain she leads the team to success and guides them through defeat all season long. The team has high hopes for prep Michaela O’Brian for next year’s season as she will be the starting goalie.
With this all in mind, Grant was able to prevent another score and finish the game with a loss of one to nothing. The team is hyped for next season and ready to be even more competitive than they were this year as the rise of an all-star upper set comes to their peak season. Come watch the home games next year as this impressive team looks to come out with a winning season.
