Girls’ Soccer Beat by Bobcats

Although the athletes fought hard and strung together good plays as a team, Big Red girls’ soccer came out with a 3-2 loss against Brewster Academy on Saturday.

Within the first ten minutes of the Brewster game, senior and captain Jacie Lemos sailed a beautiful cross from the end line to give upper Emma Dyer a header into the net. Lower Louisa Bartkovich said that the girls had worked on that play during practice and that she was excited to see the team play it out during a match.

Brewster Academy’s three goals were all scored by the same player. “The other team relied on her and didn’t do any combinations for the goals,” Bartkovich said. “I appreciated how our team stuck with the basics and actually scored goals through teamwork.”

"I think that our perseverance has been our biggest strength this season. Whenever we’ve been down a goal, we’ve never given up and have only used it as motivation to make the next one be ours.”

During the second half, Lemos took down half of Brewster’s defense as she scored the second goal. In the last five minutes, the girls came close to scoring a third goal off of a corner from Dyer.

Upper Grace Pratt said that the team has been making a lot of crosses into the box and forming many combinations, but still believes the team has a lot of room for improvement. “A major goal for the team is to continue working on our finishing,” Pratt said.

With such a close game, the athletes worked hard down to the last minute. Lower Michaella McCarthy said, “I think that our perseverance has been our biggest strength this season. Whenever we’ve been down a goal, we’ve never given up and have only used it as motivation to make the next one be ours.”

It has been a tough season for Big Red girls’ soccer with their current record, but they hope to work harder at finding players on the field, finishing and adapting to defending different players throughout the game. Saturday’s game proved their potential to win and their impressive teamwork.

Upper Aden Choate is hopeful that the team will improve their record as the season progresses.

“Each player fought through both halves with the type of aggression and dedication we’ve been working toward. It’s frustrating that our last few games have been so close, but I think the fact that we’re still so motivated shows a lot about the character of the team,” Choate said. “We continue to take our disappointment and turn it into something positive, becoming even stronger in the process.”
