Field Hockey Picks Up Second Win of Season Versus Milton

Field hockey beat Milton Academy 1-0 in a nail-biting game this Saturday, bringing its record up to 2-0 after its 4-2 win Wednesday against the Groton School.

The girls came into Saturday’s home game hungry for a win against a team they knew they could beat. The squad was ready to win from the very start of the game. “We definitely just wanted it more than Milton,” senior Noa Siegel said.

Both teams played aggressively on offense and defense during the first half, challenging each other numerous times until upper Michaela Corvi scored to put Exeter ahead.

“I got the pass from Bronwyn—I believe at the 25 [yard line]—and I just looked to get the ball inside the circle by dribbling through the defense. From there, I just used the momentum I had to push the ball in the net,” Corvi said when describing the play.

“We want to continue to build our technical base as well as work on our systems and corners”.

The girls went into the half confident, but they still knew that if they wanted to win the game, they needed to continue to work hard and put more points on the board. Senior and captain Allegra Grant credits the defense for their second half shut out, saying, “Milton came out really strong offensively and managed to make some pretty good offensive rushes and got a lot of corners, but our defense did a great job of clearing the ball out and didn't let anything by.”

Corvi also credits the defense for keeping the game close, saying, “Our defense was really tough, which allowed us to be confident in the back field and ultimately kept the game at 1-0.”

Exeter is content with its win and looks to do the same against Cushing this Saturday. The girls have been working on keeping their style of play simple at practices as well as working on transitions from offense to defense and vice versa.

The team is already meshing together and getting along well, which is important if it wants to continue its undefeated status. As the season moves on, Grant said, “We want to continue to build our technical base as well as work on our systems and corners”.

From the looks of it, it’s up to the strong senior presence to carry the team and demand hard work and high performance this season to keep up the momentum.
