Baseball Couldn’t Control Cushing

This past weekend, Big Red baseball lost to Cushing Academy’s squad 9-1 in a frustrating game.  As the midway point of the season is nearing, the team’s record stands at 2-4. Despite coming off a 14-4 win against New Hampton last Wednesday, the boys had trouble playing to their potential on Saturday.

“We didn't play as well as we could've. We had a solid practice the day before and it didn't reflect during the game,” post-graduate Will Seiferth said.

Other members of the team echoed this sentiment, with upper Stephen Cerrone reflecting on his performance during the game. “Basically, I didn't pitch as well as I could have, and Cushing was a really good team who hit the ball well and made plays in the field. We were a little flat and looked at a lot of pitches, and our hitters struggled a bit at the plate,” he said.

While it is inevitable for any team to have an off day, it was especially tough for the boys to experience one while playing against one of the stronger teams in the league. “Cushing was a good team. Probably the best team we have faced all year. Good in the field and good hitters top to bottom in their lineup. We just didn't do some of the little things we needed to do to make it a good game,” lower Collin Shapiro said.

Despite the disappointing game on Saturday, the team continues to be optimistic for the rest of the remaining games in the season. “In terms of Deerfield this upcoming Saturday, we are hoping to get two wins in the doubleheader on the road,” Shapiro said.

Seiferth also has confidence in his team’s ability to succeed in the upcoming games, emphasizing the importance of each individual contributing his part to the team. “If we all succeed within our individual roles, then we can be successful as a team. Hopefully this week we get some solid practices in where everybody is focused and comes ready to work, and then we will head into the weekend ready for Deerfield,” he said.

Cerrone also elaborated on what the team needed to work on to come away with a victory against Deerfield. “Hopefully somebody will be able to pitch in the Deerfield game, but we are just going to need to hit the ball at the plate,” he said.

It will be a tough game this Saturday, as Deerfield is one of the stronger teams in the league, but the boys are ready to face their green rivals. Their performance this weekend will give them a good idea on where they stand within the league and their chances of making the CNEPSBL tournament.  “Deerfield was pretty good last year, so it should be a tough two games and two games that we absolutely need to win if we want to make the playoff tournament this year,” Shapiro said.
