Girls’ Hockey Splits Weekend Matchups

The Big Red girls’ hockey team split their games this week. Two tough games packed the schedule for the powerhouse girls’ team as they stormed the metaphorical beaches of Worcester.

With a hard fought win, the girls looked to carry that momentum into a very familiar Deerfield setting. With energy running low, the girls could not find the strength to finish out the week on a high note. The team will use this week to regroup and get focused on their tougher games down the road.

To recap this past week in Exeter girls’ hockey, both games were high in tempo and energy. With countless ups and downs, the team strived to win in the matches and applied their maximum effort.

Lower Bonnie LaBonte highlighted some of the key moments from the game in Worcester Academy. “[Against Worcester] we won 4-2 with an empty net goal. We played well and moved the puck. The best part was we were originally behind 2-0 and we came back. It was a fun win.”

LaBonte then went on to talk about the team’s excruciating loss to Deerfield.

"We played well and moved the puck. The best part was we were originally behind 2-0 and we came back. It was a fun win."

“We battled hard [in Deerfield] we had a guest appearance by [upper Kirsten] Nergaard—it was great to see her come out to our game,” LaBonte said. “We had some golden opportunities to score across all three lines but we couldn’t get the puck in the net. Their goalie played for the Chinese national team or something like that. We let up the first goal on an odd man rush. The second two goals were scored in the last two minutes of the game on an empty net. Rachel and Kat played well.”

Both games were hard fought, and although they had different outcomes, every player thought they gave it their all. Lower Deziray DeSousa commented on the games over the past week

“We had good puck movement and we worked hard. In the Deerfield game, we had a lot of chances, but we could not capitalize on them,” DeSousa said.

Looking to the future of Big Red girls’ hockey, our proud team has a light schedule of Holderness and Nobles and Greenough. The girls will keep a light practice schedule this week as to not take a toll mid-season. Playing Holderness at home provides the athletes some time to relax, but then it’s right back to the road with a matchup at Nobles and Greenough. The team members said that all of them anticipate successful matches and victories all of their in the coming games.
