This Week in Sports’ “What the Heck?” Moment

Love and sports have gone hand-in-hand since the beginning of time. Mia Hamm and Nomar Garciappara. Rory McIlroy and Caroline Wozniacki. There was even a movie called “Love & Basketball”. So it was about time that the fans finally got involved in the love. The Atlanta Hawks gave their fans the opportunity last Wednesday with the Tinder themed “Swipe Right Night.” Based on the matchmaking mobile phone app, the Hawks encouraged single fans to use Tinder during the game, henceforth giving fans the chance to find the love of their lives or just a hookup, all in the cozy confines of Phillips Arena.

The night was a huge success. Fans crowded in the arena, wielding roses, Altoids and pick-up lines for the night ahead. Atlanta even provided free flowers for fans who matched. Along with the flowers they also had private suites reserved for couples who wanted to have some time alone. Atlanta’s mascot, Harry the Hawk, even got in on the action only to be catfished by Griz, the visiting Memphis Grizzlies’ mascot.

In review, the Hawks ushered in a new era of sports and love with the assistance of Tinder. A team working well together on the court finally found a way to draw some fans into The Highlight Arena, and at the end of the day, both the Hawks and the fans had no problem scoring, as the Hawks ended up with a 10 point victory.
