Boys’ hockey came out victorious in both of their games this weekend, beating Kent School 7-4 on Saturday and The Gunnery 2-1 on Sunday. The boys have had a strong start to the season, with these past two wins pushing their record to an impressive 6-0.Senior captain Ted Hart said the team got off to a great start against Kent, scoring two goals in the first minute, but “we let up and got into penalty trouble, so we played the majority of the first period a man down.” Even though they were down a goal, they came out very fast in the second period and we were able to “capitalize on our scoring opportunities.”In particular, Hart played a key role in helping Big Red regain their momentum after their slump during the first period. Hart’s goal was “a really big moment early in the second period when he tied it up at three,” lower Graham Rutledge said. The boys managed to increase their lead to 6-3 by the third period, which allowed them shift their focus to more defensive play in the latter half of the game.“We played conservative hockey in the last period, making sure we limited Kent's chances on our goalie,
Bryan Botcher,” Hart said.Hart attributes the victory against Kent to a well-rounded team composed of talented players at every position. There was a lot of “great effort from all four lines and all our defensemen, which is important in beating a team as talented as Kent, and our goalie was solid throughout the game,” he said.
“Brenner had a great game on Sunday against the high ranked Gunnery where he scored both of our goals in a 2-1 win.”
Big Red triumphed for the second time with their win over Gunnery the following afternoon. Senior Stanley Brenner stood out as a key player. “Brenner had a great game on Sunday against the high ranked Gunnery where he scored both of our goals in a 2-1 win,” Rutledge said.Looking forward, the boys are preparing for the following weeks of their notoriously jam-packed season. They will play Winchendon this Wednesday at home, “which will be another good test for us,” Hart said.Although it is hard to play three games within a span of five days, Big Red can certainly use their strong start of the season to their advantage. “It'll be hard to play on Wednesday because of the two games on the weekend, but we will find a way to be ready. We need to keep our momentum from the weekend going into this game and come out firing,” Rutledge said.
