Volleyball Snatches Another Victory at NMH

Big Red volleyball defeated Northfield Mount Hermon School 3-0 this past Saturday, adding another win to their undefeated season. After the long bus ride the girls were a bit groggy, but they still brought their A-game and showed NMH how talented Exeter is.The match started out a little rough for Exeter, and they lost the first few points. But, they brought it back very quickly. "It always takes us a couple points to get our heads into the game, but once we're in it we stay in it," upper Jess Hebl said.Still, the whole match was a little slow compared to their other games because NMH did not prove to be the girls' most demanding opponent. This allowed the team to work on their individual skills and teamwork."It wasn't our best game team-wise, because they were not a very challenging team. We need to work on playing our own game all the time even when the opponent isn't challenging," upper Michelle Bosché said."We were good enough that we were still able to execute our offense and work on improving ourselves rather than really worrying about being beaten," upper Zaidee Laughlin said.

Bosché had an awesome moment when she saved a ball with one arm and sent it over the net for a win.

Because they were able to work on their skills, the team had a lot of great plays. Bosché had an awesome moment when she saved a ball with one arm and sent it over the net for a win. During one of the plays, Hebl pancaked the ball—putting her hand flat to the ground for the ball to bounce on top of it so it would still be in play—and it got high enough for senior captain Brooke Detwiler to set Bosché for a point. The players themselves played very well, both individually and as a unit."Peace played really well. Her hits were insane. Eight out of every ten attempts, she got a kill. We've really improved on our hitting and chemistry between our setters and our hitters. We have also gotten really good at just getting everything up," Bosché said."There were a couple really great rallies where we played our hearts out, and at one point it looked like we were going to lose it, but we took it back again," Laughlin said.Even though the girls are undefeated and have been playing really well, they’re still working hard to become even better, and sharpen up the little things."I think overall this season had been about improving on working together effortlessly as a team. We go through so many reps in practice just to work on making good plays part of our muscle memory. I think our reactions and reflexes and logic on the court is getting much better, but we could get better about communication between players," Laughlin said.If the team manages to continue playing like they have been and working hard, it looks like they will have a great rest of the season."Every practice we push each other to get better, working mainly on our passing and serving, perfecting every touch until we see that New England's banner on the wall next to basketball's," Hebl said.
