Girls’ Soccer to Make a Comeback

The girls’ varsity soccer team took tough 4-0 loss this Saturday against a strong Choate team. With consecutive losses on the stat sheet, the team looks to regroup and prepare for the upcoming matches.Injuries have been the leading cause for the slow start to the 2014 season. Many key players in the starting lineup were injured, which, in turn, hurt the team chemistry as well. Without the entire team practicing and playing together on the field, it has been very difficult for the girls to develop their on-field team chemistry.Lower Emily Ryan believes that this chemistry had a large part to do with the two losses that started the season.“Chemistry was definitely a big part of [the reason we lost],” she commented. However, as the season progresses, Ryan thinks that by working together, the team will be able to develop their team dynamic further.Even though Big Red’s chemistry during the Choate match was not as solid as desired, other impressive aspects stood out.Lower Daniela Nemirovsky saw that compared to the game against the Nobles last week, the team came out much more organized and the players communicated with each other more effectively on the field.“In the game we were able to organize much better defensively and we communicated more effectively on the field,” Nemirovsky said. In addition, they noted their passes, leading to better scoring opportunities.Ryan agreed with Nemirovsky about the tactics that improved from the first match.“I am really looking forward to seeing how we improve because we improved dramatically in our first week together,” Ryan said.Having only practiced a couple of weeks together, the team has not been able to reach their full potential. However, with more game experience and practice, the girls will have the opportunity to consistently improve their game.Several players stood out in this match as examples of the best aspects of the team. Upper captain Charlotte Dillon set up a solid defense, preventing the advancing Choate players from scoring on several occasions. On midfield and offense, upper captain Jacie Lemos displayed unyielding persistence, fighting till the final whistle.Although the consecutive losses may be disheartening, the season is still young.Several key members from last season, including upper Hailey Hudson and lower Hannah Gustafson, will be returning in upcoming matches, which will surely boost team chemistry and morale.
