Boys’ Soccer Triumphs 4-0 Against St. Paul’s School

Coming off of last Saturday’s loss against Loomis Chaffee's varsity squad, the boys' varsity soccer team played against St. Paul’s School’s team this past Wednesday and victored over the opponents with a score of 4-0.Senior and co-captain Sterling Weatherbie, assisted by central attacking midfielder upper Devin Moore, scored the first goal. Moore scored the second goal with the assist from outside midfielder upper Matt Asante. Center back senior Liam Mckersie, the third with the assist from Moore. Co-captain senior Ted Hart, assisted by center back senior Nick Baughan, scored the fourth and final goal, concluding the game with an impressive victory.Weatherbie said that although the team earned its first victory of the season with a satisfying score, the team’s performance could have been improved. However, Weatherbie noted that the team entered the game with a different mindset than in the previous games against Loomis Chaffee School and Milton Academy, which helped them to defeat their opponents.“It wasn't our best performance this year. We could've been better but we’re happy with the win,” Weatherbie said. “Our subs really gave us a boost, and we played well defensively. I think the difference today was determination. We wanted it more than they did, but again, we can be way better.”Left-midfielder senior Max Rerkpattanapipat said that regardless of the areas of improvement the team still has, all players played successfully and that the team had absolute control of the game.“Our team absolutely dominated the whole game controlling the ball for the overwhelming majority of the game,” Rerkpattanapipat said.“We did an amazing job generating chances and opportunities; we had at least 15 shots.”Moore, who scored one goal and had two assists in the game, said that the victory was a precious one and that this win will fuel the team to defeat other competitors in the league and pull off another winning season for the school. He also added that the team’s solidarity and persistence on the field were stronger than previous games.“One of the memorable moments today in the game was getting on the scoreboard. We hadn't scored a goal before today and it was good to get 4 guys on the score sheet. I think we played as a team today and we worked hard all over the field no matter who was in the game,” Moore said.Weatherbie said that while the team deserves to celebrate the win, it should also focus on upcoming games and the specifics that need attention.“We need to work on moving the ball quicker, and finishing our chances,” Weatherbie said. “We have a tough game on Sunday. We're taking it one game at a time.”Rerkpattanapipat echoed Weatherbie’s sentiments and said that the team will strive to bring more news of victory for Exeter.“Everyone played hard and worked as a team and the game was overall fun. It was also a decisive win for us, but we are going to keep working harder and use this momentum to keep winning games,” Rerkpattanapipat said.
