Improved Offense Unable to Top Worcester

EXETER – Big Red baseball showed improvement this weekend, but their hot offense proved unable to take home the win. Exeter doubled their combined run total after the first three games with ten runs in the first game of the double-header at Worcester, but the pitching staff was rocked for a solid 29 runs over the series. The solid batting could not carry the team to victory. The team dropped both games, 10-21 and 5-8.“Our bats came alive in this series,” said prep Collin Shapiro. “We haven't been able to put many runs on the board and we put up ten in the first game and five in the second. In our first couple games we hadn't been able to hit, but in this series we weren't able to field or pitch. We just need to put two and two together and come out in our next game with some attitude; like we have something to prove.”Exeter has dropped to a .200 start to the season, but this is understandable, given that it takes time for people to get used to playing together and getting ready to bat and pitch well. With the last game behind them and the previous low-scoring pitcher battles before the double-header, the athletes have proven that they have the best of both worlds. Now they just need to combine it.“[Hitting well] is something we've been looking to do all along, and now that we've shown that we can, I think the hitting will be more consistent,” said upper Parker Wild. “The pitching wasn't what we'd hoped. We walked more batters than we would have liked, and Worchester capitalized on it. We turned it around in the second game, but unfortunately we had one inning that set us back. It was much closer than the first, though, and Worchester is a team I think we can compete with in the future. As to our performance, I think we have a lot of potential as a team and a great group of guys who play well together, so I'm looking forward to the rest of the season.”Still, this is not a hopeful start for Exeter. The team isn’t just young, they’re also new to playing with each other, meaning that there’s a serious lack of chemistry that was present between the seniors and uppers last year. With only a handful of returning starters, it’ll take time for the group to mesh. Fortunately, the chemistry formed through this season will carry on for years to come, and hopefully set in quick enough to blast Big Red through E/A.Exeter’s next game is at Cushing Academy this Saturday at 1:00. Their next home game is Wednesday, April 23rd at 3:30 against Bridgeton Academy.
