Young Baseball Team Looks to Improve

EXETER – Boys’ varsity baseball had a strong season last year, winning thirteen out of their 20 games, capping it off with a 6-2 domination over Andover. However, this year they hope to be even better than the last, for while they’ve lost five seniors from last year, including some integral members, ten out of the 19 active players on the 2014 roster are new talent added to the squad. With ten out of the 17 matches at home, Exeter is also given the slight home field advantage during the season. With these two components combined, it’s possible that Exeter could even go above .750 and be one of the more dominant teams in the league.“We have a lot of new players as well as returners, and we’re being led by co-captains (and seniors) Joey Hebl and Nate Dow,” lower Spenser Young said. “We’ve got skilled ball players, and the team’s coming together fast. We’ve gelled really well in the past few weeks and everybody on the team is becoming buddies with each other.”“This year is going to be totally different from last year with most of the team being new guys, but I think the leadership from Matt Greaves, Joey Hebl and Nate Dow will help the team chemistry,” lower Trevor Cosgrove said. “They’ll get us to the final four games at Holy Cross.”The one defining factor that can make or break a team early in the season is chemistry, and while players may be clicking early on, the true test will be the first game. If people have adjusted to each other’s play styles, the batting lineup is set up right, and everyone is comfortable playing together, then this could be another great season for Big Red baseball.Their next game is against Northfield Mount Herman this Saturday at home, starting at 2:00 pm.
