Girls' JV Soccer Falls at Andover
Big Red junior varsity girls’ soccer finished their season with a bitter 1-0 loss against Andover on Wednesday. Exeter sought to continue their two-game winning streak but failed against Andover’s strong team who ended their season with an 8-3-2 record.Despite their loss, Exeter had a solid performance throughout the whole game, playing a defensively in the first half and then changing to an offensive team in the second half. “We played conservatively in the first half, which led to their goal, but in the second half we really started stepping to the ball,” lower Lucy Weiler said. “Since we were being more aggressive, more and more plays started going our way, and we got more shots off.”After conceding a goal at the end of the first half, Exeter’s offense got Andover’s defense scrambling with their effective plays inside and outside the box, although they had trouble getting the ball into the back of the net. Also throughout the two halves, Exeter’s wing defenders and defensive midfielders formed a strong wall of defense against the opponent’s offense.“I thought out performance was pretty solid,” prep Charlotte Sununu said. “One of the main things we try and do on the team is not playing the score board and for playing a team with their winning record on their home field I thought that losing by one was not a terrible outcome. Of course winning would have been nice but we still gave all we had for all 80 minutes.”Although Big Red had a record of 4-7-5 and finished the season with a loss, players were optimistic about the progress that the team made over the past three months.“We started out pretty poorly; our first four games were losses. We had sort of a turning point after the St. Paul's game where the whole team sat down without our coaches and just talked about what was going wrong,” Sununu said. “Our season completely went up from there and we could all see the improvement. We don't even seem like the same team that started out the term.”
