Girls' Soccer Stays Tight at the Back, Suffocates Brewster in 0-0 Stalemate

EXETER - Big Red girls’ varsity soccer tied in a scoreless game against Brewster Academy at home on Saturday, ending their winning streakExeter had won two games in a row against Northfield Mount Hermon School and Kimball Union Academy before coming into this game.Players and fans were hoping for another win to improve the team’s losing record but were also aware of Brewster’s incredible success this season. Coming into the game against Exeter, Brewster’s team had been on an eight-game winning streak and held a season record of 9-1-1.Despite the scoreless tie, players were satisfied with the team’s overall performance on Saturday. They believed that Big Red had fought hard and that its defense played a big role in keeping the score even against Brewster’s strong offense.“We’ve been playing very well compared to past games. We played really defensive and didn’t get that many shots off,” senior Dani Sim said. “The tie was mostly a result of our defensive playing. We had a really strong defense."In addition, Upper Abby Scheetz noted that the offense performed well with some clever plays inside and outside of the box but unfortunately failed to get the ball into the back of the net. “We had a lot of great opportunities, but we just couldn’t find the net,” she said.Players believed that the team should work more to strengthen its offense during practices and maintain the high level of defense that the team has been playing with in its last few games.“We couldn’t score this game because we didn’t use our wings as much, and we didn’t capitalize on crosses,” Sim said. “We can improve by being more offensive, using wings more, and switching balls from side to side more quickly and efficiently. We should probably stay focused on scrimmages in practice, work on crosses, and getting shots off them.”Despite the tie and the 3-8-1 record thus far this season, players were optimistic about the improvements that the team has made over the past term and believed that this game showed how far they had come.“The game showed our continued improvement since the beginning of the season,” upper Abby Scheetz said. “Although the game ended in a tie, Brewster has a very strong girls soccer team and to have tied with them shows how far we’ve come. We should keep up our strong defense and focus on finishing the goal-scoring opportunities we make.”Soxie now looks forward to a road trip to Tabor this weekend. The girls edged Tabor 1-0 last year, and they will hope to come away with a similar result on Saturday. Tabor is undefeated on the season, but the girls will look to give the Seawolves a run for their money and hand them their first loss of the fall.
