Boys' Soccer Comes Back to Tie Milton in Wednesday Contest
Boys’ varsity soccer played Milton Academy on Wednesday afternoon and came away with a hard-fought 1-1 draw. After a win and a tie at the jamboree that kicked off their season last Saturday at Belmont Hill, the team seems to be keeping up their hard work and effort on the field. For a young team so early on in the season, boys’ varsity soccer has opened the season strongly.Upper Sterling Weatherbie recalled the jamboree that kicked off their season.“The first scrimmage was against BB&N, and we ended up tying that game 1-1,” Weatherbie said. “The goal was scored by PG Henry Hart off a rebound shot by lower Trevor Cosgrove. The second game was against Belmont Hill, and we won 1-0 on a goal by new lower Devon Moore, who tucked one far post after receiving a majestic ball from senior captain Henry Stevens.”Even over the course of just the scrimmage, the boys began to play better together and mesh as a team.“I think as we played together more and more, we became closer as a team and communicated more effectively as a team on the field, and we began to show more control and confidence the more we played together,” upper James Glass said. “We kept improving as the scrimmages went on and finished it with a win, which was really exciting for everyone.”The boys worked well together when playing Milton on Wednesday, especially after they got into their groove in the second half of the game. As they gelled, the players piled the pressure on Milton, eventually tying up the score.“We started off pretty slowly, but in the second half we managed to pick it up and get one back,” senior Noah Wright said. “It was a great team effort. Across the board, we did really well.”Wright is optimistic about the rest of the season and the progression of the team and the individual players.“The team is very good,” he said. “We’re very young, and I think it can only get better from here.”The athletes are shooting for the gold this season, with all the boys looking forward to the New England Prep School Championship.“Our team’s goal this season is the same as it is every season: to win the New England Prep School Championship. After falling two goals short last season, we’re looking to bounce back in our first game against Milton,” Weatherbie said. “We brought in a lot of new players with a lot of skill who will start for our team this year, including cousins Edward Hart, an upper, and Henry Hart, who is a PG. We also have lowers Devon Moore and Henry Behrens and PG’s Logan Sandor and Slater Sullivan.”“I think what our team will thrive off of most is a unanimous desire to win,” Weatherbie added. “With our top-class leadership from [captains] Henry Stevens and Stu Scott, I am nothing but optimistic about this upcoming season.”Glass agreed, confident that the team is poised for success.“I look forward to seeing all our guys perform on the field and give it their all, each and every game, and although we play some really tough teams and we are a fairly young team compared to recent years, I don’t think anyone on the team doubts that we have the ability to win it all this year,” Glass said.
