B1V had lost only once all year (by 0.6 seconds to Tabor) and was seeded second for the Championships. On a cold and rainy day, they beat the other best 17 schools in New England with a lightning-fast time of 4:16.98,the second fastest time ever in the finals of these championships and beating the field by an amaz- ing 3.6 seconds (ahead of Andover in 6th place by over 10 seconds). B1V was led by seniors Marlow Mizer (cox), Andrew Rondeau (stroke, co-captain), Mark Serbent (5-seat, co-captain), Max Drach (4- seat) and Finn Meeks (2-seat). Uppers JB Baker (7-seat), Sam Helms (6-seat), Lakin Vitton (bow seat) and lower Benjamin Cohen (3-seat) made this crew one of the fastest in Exeter crew history.B2V had a strong season as well, pushing the competition in all races and gaining speed all year in preparation for the New England Champion- ships. In their morning heat at NEIRAs, Exeter faced the toughest competition in the 18-boat field and ended up in third place, less than 0.1 s behind second place and less than 0.3 seconds behind first place and eventual winner of the finals BC High School. Needless to say, only a photo-finish ex- amination could determine the eventual winner of this race. Unfortunately, only the top two places in each heat qualified for the finals, so Exeter, evenif they had the third fastest time of all 18 crews in the morning heats, did not advance to the finals. Seniors Conrad Homm, Channing Prend, Nick Sto- rozynski and Blake Bowman helped make this boat very fast in a very competitive league.GIRLS' CREW::Led by co-captains, Karla Beltran and Catherine Denton, with a total of ten seniors, the crew of 2013 had a fantastic season for all 6 boats. G2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 were undefeated, while G1 lost one pivotal race to St. Paul’s. At the New England Interschols, G1 resound- ingly took back that loss with a ten second victory over St. Paul's and a ve second margin over the 2nd place nishers. G2 won their grand nal handily, capping off their third annual undefeated season, led again by Karla Beltran. G3 rowed a great nal race out in front of the eld, losing only in the nal 20 strokes to Kent. Going into the season, the girls had greatcon dence from their victory at the Henley Women's Regatta in England last June, but half that boat half that boat had graduated. What appeared to be a build- ing year turned out to be one of our strongest, thanks to great rowing in G1 by the veterans Cory Johnson, Forrest Barker, Emily Ball, Jenny Di Pietro, and Ker- rick Edwards, but also by one year senior Marygail DiBuono. Jessica Michaels has proven her talent as a coxswain for the second year and will be representing the US National Junior Rowing team this summer. In the second boat, co-captain Karla Beltran's leadership from the helm, co-captain Catherine Denton's tena- cious stroking, and Ainsley Fahey's dedication to the sport maintained their unchallenged position in the league. With enthusiastic and t younger athletes in the rst two boats as well as in 3-6, we look forward to next season as we reluctantly say good bye to an outstanding class of seniors. The girls won the Team Point Trophy for the third consecutive year, the E. Ar- thur Gilcreast Bowl. Special thanks to Alison Hobbie, Sarah Nute and Keith Hereford.GOLF:The team this year was a team of “Never Give Up”. Every match was a hard fought battle and pure determination was of the determining factor in our wins. Captains Nissim Ray and Rudy Oku led the team. In scoring average, Kyle Alexander was the low average. The teams play continually improved from the start of the season to its end!Good nishes in the invitational tournaments at
Kingswood-Oxford, with Paul Lei tying for 10th place at Kingswood-Oxford.The highlight of the season for the team was a comeback victory against Andover in our last match winning 408 - 412.Our three ladies play was outstanding at the “Pippy O’Connor” Invitational. Representing us were Catherine Moore, Erin NaPier and Jane Eun.It was a true team effort as all players stepped to the Tee to contribute to our success.BOYS' LAX:
9-8.Six players nished the season with batting aver-ages over .300: Chloe Dubocq leading the team at .509, Helen Hultin at .448, Alex Betrus at .426, Ashley Metcalf at .364, Weilin Chan at .327, and newcomerto the sport Az Nalbandian at .425. Az also led the team with three home runs and a slugging percentage of .700.Senior captain Ashley Metcalf nished the season having pitched 101 of the 111 innings playewithan earned run average of 2.05. She recorded 106 strike- outs while only giving up 15 walks. Also of note is Hannah Myers, catching 109 of the 111 innings played this season and only giving up three passed balls. The season highlight, after dropping four games to Tabor last year and one earlier in the season this year, was coming back from a 9-0 de cit at the topof the 6th inning to beat them 13-12 in eight innings. The spark that ignited the comeback was a grand slam off the bat of Az Nalbandian. It really was a de ning moment for the team – a true team victory.PEAGVSB would like to give a “shout-out” to the JV Softball team and their new coach Amy Ma- cLean for a great inaugural season. The team would like to thank Coach Sweet for all of her hard work this season and Erin Mitchell who joined the coaching staff as an assistant this year. They also wish Ashley Met- calf and Paula Gaither all the best next year. Ashley will play softball at Valley City State in North Dakota and Paula is going to Columbia. Looking forward to a great 2014 season.BOYS' TENNIS:The varsity A tennis team had a successful season, nishing with a record of 7 and 4. After shutting outtheir rst two opponents, the whole team was in top form in the next match as they defeated perennial pow- er Choate 6-1. This match was followed by an excit- ing 4-3 win over St. John’s Prep. After losing a hard fought match to Andover, the team recovered to shut out their next two opponents, including a very satisfy- ing 4-0 win over Milton. In the New England Class A championships, Big Red lost an extremely close match to Hotchkiss.Throughout the season there were two things which never changed. Team MVP Kenny Tao always dominated his opponent at number one singles, as henished with a record of 11-0, never losing a single set. Kenny and Kelvin Lee were also undefeated atrst doubles. Co-captains Kelvin and Henry Cilek both nished their fourth varsity season for Exeter, and their play at second and third singles was a big factor in the team's overall success. Upper Nikhil Raman at #4 and prep Rex Tercek at #6 each nished the season with winning records. Unfortunately, both Paul Lee and Charlie Boyd suffered injuries during the season, but whenever they were able to play they gave the team a real boost, both in singles and in doubles. Se- nior Will Yu won all three times when called on to ll in for an injured teammate.TRACK:3 Prep RecordsChukwudi Ikpeazu shot put 43’5.5” Chukwudi Ikpeazu discus 133’7” Burabari Peace Kabari 100m 13.22Prep Trophy Awarded to Chukwudi Ikpeazu 46 Hall of Fame Performances
The 2013 season was terri c. Although our goal was to go undefeated, the incredibly tough competi- tion and the quality of our schedule made that almost impossible. Despite losing ve close games, all ve losses were against excellent teams in which we bat- tled hard. Amazingly, we were winning at some point in each of those ve games, and we were certainly capable of beating any team in New England. Our record was 14-5.Highlights would certainly start with our nal game win against Andover that was also the last game of Coach Bergofsky’s 36 year coaching career. The boys really wanted to end on a winning note, and they played dominant lacrosse in the last game to make that happen. Other great games would include our wins over Loomis Chaffee, NMH, St Sebastian’s, and our shutout of Tabor. Despite the loss, the team’s play in the 2nd half of the Deer eld game was perhaps our best lacrosse of the season. Deer eld is the #1 ranked team in all of New England and ranked #9 nationally ( prep or high school). We outscored them 5-2 in the 2nd half and outplayed them in every phase of the game. It was a great effort that truly showed the heart and soul of the team as well as our incredible skill level. Our four captains ( Forrest Corcoran, Chris Keat- ing, Matt Ryan and Nick Weigel) were great lead-ers of this team of 34 players. What stands out most about their leadership will be the way they treated our youngest rookie players that consisted of six preps and four lowers. These captains took these guys under their wing, helped them become better players, worked with them individually during and after practice, and made them feel like they belonged as important members of the team. All the 15 seniors on the team were close to each other, and all 15 showed the other younger guys what it meant to work hard for a common goal and how to bond as a team. The team really improved nicely as the season progressed. Three of our ve losses occurred in therst two weeks of the season when we started out1-3 and we were still guring out the best personnel combinations on offense. Everyone was still getting comfortable with their role on the team, and it took a few weeks for the offense to gel. After that, 3rd loss, the team went 13-2, with the two close losses coming against Deer eld and Brewster who are respectively ranked #1 and #3 in all of New England. Everyone kept improving individually as well as collectively right up until the last game. By the end of the season, I would have liked our chances playing against any team in New England.Individual highlights include- Matt Ryan and Chris Keating named US La- crosse All-Americans, both for the 2nd time- Both Chris and Matt were also named to the Under Armour North All American Team (top 22 play- ers in all of New England AND New York.) This isthe most prestigious high school lacrosse award that is obtainable.- Nick Weigel named a US Lacrosse Academic All-American- Matt Ryan being the rst long pole player to lead the team in scoring and setting new season and career scoring records for defenseman.- Bill Glennon named Assistant Coach of the Year by our Eastern Coaches association.GIRLS' LAX:This team began its season with a trip south, to connect as a group and peal away the cobwebs. We returned to a snow-covered New England, optimistic about our prospects but cautious, knowing we had compiled a team that was largely made of athletic but novice lacrosse players. Our caution proved prudent, as we came out of the gate with six straight losses, many of them by one or two goals, still unable to put all the pieces together for one full game. Then New Hampton came along, an undefeated team, and we stalled for 14 minutes, eventually accumulating ourrst win at 14-7. We had turned a corner. Day after day of drill after drill emphasizing fundamentals bore fruit. The second half of the season gave us a 6-2 record, beating two other undefeated teams, triumphing over Middlesex in triple over time, and coming up just short against Andover, 13-12 in overtime. This team was lead by nine fantastic seniors, including captains Dar- by Henry, Gabii Wozniak and Carlin Zia. The wealth was spread across the full team, with various players shining in different games. Marley Jenkins (2015) and Leo Liautaud (2014) were named NEPSWLA All- Stars, Gabii Wozniak was named team MVP, Alyssa Heinze (2014) was given the Jardine lacrosse award, The Kesler for spirit and dedication went to Carlin Zia and Maggie Mullard(2013), Bronwyn Shields (2016) and Clara Hobbie(2015) were voted as Most Improved Players, in an unprecedented three-way tie.SOFTBALL:The 2013 season got off to a slow start with the first four games canceled and a DH changed to a single game because of the unpredictable nature of Spring weather in New England. Under the great leadership of team captains Paula Gaither and Ashley Metcalf and a special and unique camara- derie, the team was able to keep focused and was able to achieve the goal of a win-loss record over .500, finishing the season with an overall record of
