Golf Beats Andover and Governor's in Stroke Play
Big Red golf defeated both Andover and Governor’s in a competitive round of stroke play on Saturday. Exeter’s golf team finished with a 408 stroke total, and the players were able to close out a close match, beating Andover by two strokes and Governor’s by seven. The win was especially notable considering Exeter’s loss to Andover earlier in the season.
Many of the players agreed that the home course advantage at Breakfast Hill Golf Club was key to their victory. The team played previous round against Big Blue at Andover, and they struggled mightily, finishing a substantial 42 strokes behind their rivals. This time around, however, the familiarity of the course helped the Big Red golfers.
"This was my first match playing Andover's varsity team, but this match was different from all the other matches we played against them this year, JV or varsity, because we played them at home," upper Ryan Heavirland said.
In addition to their home course advantage, Exeter’s golfers also enjoyed a technically sound day, hitting their balls well and avoiding errors. "We made a lot of good shots down the stretch and our ball striking was a lot better too," senior captain Nissim Ray said.
Saturday’s match also had an abundance of great individual performances. Upper Kyle Alexander shot a 74, Ray shot a 78, prep Michael Kim shot an 81 and senior Catherine Moore finished with an 83.
In his group, Kim defeated his Andover opponent by ten strokes. "I was just hitting my irons and sinking my putts consistently," he said.
Ray also successfully played his irons and managed to stay on the fairway on the back nine.
Although this was the golf team’s last match of the season, they hope to carry the momentum from their Saturday win to the Kingswood Oxford Tournament on Wednesday.
"There is one tournament left in the year, and it’s the biggest of the season. I think that if we just play our game then we should be fine," Kim said.
