Golf Falls in Tough Road Matchup

Varsity golf faced stiff competition at Deerfield Academy, losing 2-8. The defeat marks Big Red’s second of the season following a 1-6 loss in an away match against Phillips Andover and Governor's Academy last Wednesday. The team’s season record stands at 1-2.

Big Red sent the seven players who had outperformed their teammates in a practice match to compete against the best team in their league. Last year, the team suffered a 0.5 - 9.5 loss to Deerfield, but improved this season thanks to senior Catherine Moore and preps Michael Kim and Matthew Kim.

“Our team is really looking good this year. Two of the players that we sent to Deerfield are preps so they can only get better in the following years. I was surprised we didn’t lose as badly as we did last year, even without our best player, Paul Lei,” upper Jack Bright said.

The team performed exceptionally well and shot some of their best scores of the season, but could not outperform golf powerhouse Deerfield. Every matchup could have gone either way, but Exeter’s opponents performed slightly better, according to prep Michael Kim.

“Deerfield was insanely good. They have some of the country's best golfers,” he said.

“I thought that our team played pretty well - much better than how we played against North Hampton. However, we came up short because the other team was too good,” prep Matthew Kim, who shot an 88, said.

Senior co-captain Rudy Oku agreed, adding that Exeter’s team is steadily improving. “They were very consistent in their play,” he said. “Compared to our last match, our team definitely did better. There’s no question about it.”

Michael Kim complimented the team’s performance. “Coach said this was the best we have played this season,” he said. Kim won his match by a margin of two strokes by birdying twice and shooting a 41 on the back nine.

Despite the loss, the team was happy to perform as well as they did, and hopes to continue their newfound momentum into Wednesday’s home match against Tilton.
