StuCo Presidential Candidate Q&A: Mitchell Kirsch, Day Student

Why do you want to be StuCo president?

I want to be StuCo president because Exeter is a place that has invested in me and I feel it is my responsibility to give everything I have to this school. StuCo president is a great way to give back to this school.

What are the ideal qualities of the StuCo president and why do you think you fulfill these ideals?

The truth is that the ideal StuCo president needs to be a respected person that teachers and students are willing to work with. The key is efficient communication. I believe I fulfill these ideals in every aspect of my life. The two positions I play in sports, point guard (basketball) and setter (volleyball), are responsible for the majority of the communication on the court to ensure the team is playing to its best abilities. Through these sports I have learned how to push the right buttons to achieve success. In school I come to the Harkness table prepared and ready for discussion. I am quick to realize when the conversation is going in circles and have gotten better at ensuring progress is made in discussion. As StuCo president I will make sure progress is being made at all times.

What policies do you hope to implement? Why?

I am still in discussions with many teachers over the specifics of the policies I am hoping to implement. They are all focused on a happier and healthier Exeter experience. I am not going to nail down what I think should be done for next year because being stubborn with policies is why nothing gets done. It is my goal to find policies that the teachers are willing to vote for and propose them to the students. If the teachers like them, and the students also support them then things can be accomplished. The overall goal is to maintain rigor and improve health simultaneously.

Do you have any comments about the outgoing administration?

I think they have done a nice job of setting the stage for a happier and healthier Exeter experience. It is now time to capitalize on their preliminary work.

What distinguishes you from the other candidates?

I come into this race knowing that the position I am running for can only accomplish things if the teachers are on board first. It may be hard at first for people to come to the realization that we don’t have equal say in how this school should be run, but that is a critical realization if we want to accomplish things.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

Remember: More sleep. More freedom. Vote Mitchell Kirsch!
