PEAN Editors Announced
This past week, Exeter’s yearbook, PEAN, held its annual board turnover, handing over the reigns to a fresh group of editors who look to bring new insight and talent to the already prestigious publication. Uppers Lily Sexton, Ariel Kim and Trishna Mohite will serve as the new Editors-in-Chief (EIC) of PEAN, and will be responsible for selecting the remaining board members during the coming weeks.
The position of EIC is highly coveted, and consists of many leadership roles within the yearbook. The EICs are responsible for reviewing all submitted pages of the yearbook, compiling the pages into one book, organizing the associates and photographers and supervising construction of the book.
“The Editors-in-Chief design the book with the help of the advisers, and as Editors-in-Chief you help make pages, but you also edit the spread that will be put into the book,” Sexton said. “So you go over the spreads and submit them. Before they are submitted, we look at every page to make sure they are perfect.”
The EIC is also responsible for the stylistic components of the paper. “My job as EIC will be to create the theme, design and layout for the yearbook next year,” Kim said. “After that, I’ll mostly be overseeing the rest of the Senior Board and the Associate Board, which is basically just making sure all sections are working well and doing what they’re supposed to be doing. I'll also fill in the gaps in work and catching the things that might slip through the cracks.”
In order to apply for this position, upper members of PEAN filled out and completed a three step process: they submitted a written application, made mock templates and were interviewed by the previous board members.
According to former EIC, senior Janet Chen, the previous board sorted through incoming applications, looking for the qualities of a capable EIC.
“The Editor-in-Chief position is very demanding, and there are always important qualities that we look for: organization, level-headedness and, most importantly, dedication to PEAN and its mission,” she said.

In addition to listing out the ideal traits of an EIC, Chen also expressed her excitement and respect for the talented and passionate new board.
“I’m really excited to see what Lily, Ariel and Trishna will put together. They all have unique skill sets that complement each other, and all of them care deeply about PEAN.”
The new editors will now take on the process of selecting the remaining members of the new board. This process is a long one, but the editors must work hard to have the board finalized as quick as they can, so that they can begin work on the “Spring Supplement,” a companion booklet to PEAN which documents sports and activities occurring in the spring term.
The EICs hope that, throughout the process of completing both the “Spring Supplement” and the actual yearbook, their board will help to create a long-lasting, influential yearbook that people will appreciate and admire. “I want to help immortalize a year of our lives,” Kim said. “And to be part of the creative process that is PEAN.”
