StuCo Plans Spring Events: Badminton, Spring Fling

Whether fire dancing, a badminton tournament or the exciting “spring fling,” Student Council was abuzz Tuesday night with the planning of spring term activities, as well as the future of StuCo-formed policies. As the 2013-14 council approaches its final days, the Executive Board took the meeting time to discuss the ensuing plans of the Policy Committee and what should be pursued next, since two StuCo drafts are currently waiting to be addressed in Faculty Meetings. The first, winter thaw, hopes to designate one weekend in mid-winter with no assignments exceeding fifteen minutes in length, while the second proposition, post-break scheduling, aims to alter the schedule for the first day of classes following break for the benefit of jet-lagged students. Time was also allotted in the end of the meeting for Exonians interested in the Executive Board elections to talk to the current board.“The purpose of tonight's meeting was to establish a direction for policy committee to move in for spring term, as we have moved to talking to department heads for winter thaw, as well as creating a space for potential candidates for Exec Board to ask questions,” Vice President Emily Lemmerman said. After Tuesday night’s meeting, the board noticed several aspects of Exeter life that their peers would like to improve.“We wanted to collect policy ideas for next year and answer the key question, which is what does Student Council think the students want in terms of policy,” Secretary Benj Cohen said.“It seems Exonians are looking for more structured feedback system for adults, like when students ask adults for policy feedback, more information coming back to students after a proposal is discussed in Faculty Meetings, and an increased forum usage to collect policy ideas.”In addition, it was also important to address the more pressing matters of StuCo, particularly involving spring term events.“For the rest of the term, StuCo is working on a Thanking Staff Concert, as well as a few spring events, mainly 3 v 3 basketball, s'mores night, a movie on the quad, and spring fling, which is a gym night and barbecue-type, fun springtime event,” Lemmerman said. The Recreation Committee was not the only group preparing for the coming warm weather, as the Services Committee is also hoping to accomplish several requests by the end of the year, including distributing dorm supplies, meeting with the library to make the periodicals room a space in which food is allowed and provided, and buying blankets for use on the South Side Quad, according to Lemmerman.Although the meeting already featured an odd combination of agenda items, ears perked up when the recently founded club Luminosity requested $525 to assist in buying staffs and wicks for fire dancing. The group focuses on taekwondo, martial arts, gymnastics and fire dancing, and they have been meeting since early February. If all goes according to plan, the club will be able to spice up both spring and fall term with performances at the “spring fling” and E/A Bonfire, a sure way to energize Exonians.
