IT to Increase Email Inbox Space
Students may no longer have to face the frustration of a full inbox next year, due to a new proposal brought about by StuCo to increase inbox space in the school’s email system by 300 times.Over the summer, Exeter will upgrade to the 2013 version of Microsoft Outlook Web Access, replacing the current 2003 version. In addition to increasing mailbox space, the new version will be more compatible to browsers like Chrome and will include a search function."There new features can actually compete with Gmail, so that less students will probably have to have their Exeter email forwarded to Gmail next year," Tech Committee Head upper Tyler Weitzman said.Council member upper TJ Hodges is eagerly anticipating the change. "The new Outlook 2013 webmail will be much more convenient for sending attachments and avoiding erased emails. I am prepared for some adjusting with the new Office Suite, but overall I am excited for the change."Hodges is also glad for the opportunity for email access from a wide variety of computer systems and browsers, made possible by the technological advancements. "It also gives students and faculty easier access to cloud features, which may help them save and open files from anywhere," Hodges said. "I am sure there will be some speed bumps along the way, but the installation process will take place over summer, so I think it will be a smooth process."StuCo President Max Freedman believed that the change was long overdue. "Technology has greatly advanced since a decade ago, yet our school has been using technology from a decade ago, including our current email client, which is Microsoft Outlook Web Access 2003," Freedman said. "It only makes sense that we are upgrading the email client and system now."
